A yoga teacher told me once, “usually what we avoid is what we need the most.” I’ve found this to be very true. Many of us avoid slowing down, finding stillness and quiet, disconnecting. But when we do, and when we’re able to relax into that stillness, it usually feels pretty damn good. Using a eye pillow can help aid in this relaxation process. An eye pillow is small pillow with soft fabric, filled with flax seeds and some type of scented oils or herbs (think: lavender). It’s quite possible to buy online, but we met a local maker to buy from, which we think is way cooler that hitting that Prime button.
Tasha owns BlueKnot Crafts, where she creates a variety of home sewn products. Tasha started her business sewing and selling quilts. Tasha, who is a real estate lawyer by day, began to understand to importance of self-care, and wanted to create products for people to do the same. We sat down with to learn more about when, how, and why to use eye pillows. Here are the facts:
They can help with focus in meditation.
I agree, because I’ve done this. By blocking out all light, it’s easier to focus inward. And the eye pillow provides an extra deterrent from blinking your eyes open to check the clock to see how much time you have left in your meditation. We’ve all been there.
They can be used cold or hot.
The eye packs can go in the freezer or the microwave. When cold, the eye pad is great for depuffing tired eyes, or first thing in the morning to gradually wake up. To do this, pop it in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer for 2-3 hours. When hot, the pillow can also be used on your neck as well to relax sore muscles. To heat up the pillow, put it in the microwave for about 1 minute. I didn’t think 1 minute was going to be enough, but it was plenty hot.
They can trigger relaxation.
The weight of the pillow on your face can trigger relaxation, which is why the pillows are great to use before sleep. The light weight of the flax seed provides a light amount of accupressure, which can release tension from the forehead, cheekbones, and temples. We plan on posting another article specifically on accupressure soon.
They can be used for a midday break.
Most of us are required to use computers at work. This can strain and tire the eyes, which can cause a host of health issues. Tasha recommends setting an alarm throughout your day to take a 1-2 minute break. Pop the eye pillow on, rest your eyes, and get back to work.
They encourage self-care.
It’s great to have a few small, simple items that remind you to take care of yourself, and to pamper and love yourself–even if it’s just for a minute.
