It’s no secret that I’m a bit of a fitness junkie. I constantly hop around from barre studio to cycling studio, from HIIT class to yoga. And I’ve learned the hard way that it isn’t exactly financially responsible to buy multiple memberships at numerous studios all across town. So, in the boutique fitness world in Cincinnati, you sometimes have to choose membership at one or two studios. So where do you go if you like boutique fitness, but also want a variety of classes? Inner Fire Fitness.
Inner Fire opened its Downtown Cincinnati doors in June 2017. Owners Christine Lindner and Amanda Bloomquist share the same passion for fitness. They wanted to create an inviting space where people can come, experience something new, and be coached by educated instructors who focus on functional movement.
They nailed it.
The space they occupy is on the corner of 4th and Main, right in the heart of downtown Cincy. Every single detail of the decor is thought out and intentional. From their glistening wallpaper, to the artistic light sculptures, to the plush couches that encourage people to lounge and converse pre or post class over smoothies.
Which brings me to my next point. There’s a smoothie bar. And they ask for your order before class so that it’s waiting for you when you come out. Epic. The Innergy Bar, as they cleverly coined it, communicates their belief in of holistic health and wellness. Abs are made in the kitchen, right? The Innergy Bar uses only whole foods and natural ingredients so that you are not only caring for your body in class, but also pre or post through dietary nourishment.
OK enough about the lobby. Now let’s take a look at where the work is being done.
Inner Fire Fitness offers a variety of classes, many of which are concepts that are relatively new to Cincinnati. While most of the concepts are new, Inner Fire is extremely welcoming and the opposite of intimidating. We sat down with studio manager, Sara, to learn more about Inner Fire’s class offerings.
As defined by their website: The Flo̅t Aerial program is a comprehensive fitness program using hammocks or “aerial silks” as assistance to counteract gravity.
Here are just some of the benefits that the use of the hammocks provides:
Increased flexibility with a more efficient (and safer) stretch
Relieves compression on bones and tension in muscles
Works with gravity so muscles work harder, core muscles become stronger and spinal and shoulder flexibility increases
Functional support for those that have past injuries
Provides focus and stress relief by encouraging mindfulness which builds confidence and relieves tension
Meriden and I took Molly’s Flot class a few Saturdays ago and it was a total ball. We both walked in thinking that we would totally suck at it (we’re more athletic than coordinated). But with our instructor, Molly’s detailed instructions, we were airborne and hanging upside down in no time (photo proof below). It was honestly so fun that we forgot we were working out. That being said, doing plank with your feet suspended is intense. For those of you that may be nervous to try out an aerial class, Inner Fire prides itself on safety and quality instructors. Each movement we did was adequately explained and then demonstrated, and adjustments were always offered and encouraged as needed.
In-Trinity® was developed based on yoga, Pilates, and martial arts training modalities. This practice offers means to build strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and agility, and is done on a matted, inclined board. The gravity and the negative space underneath the board make progression and regression of poses and movements more accessible depending on individuals’ needs for their personal practice.
The only dark room at InnerFire fitness is the bootcamp room, which is lined with treadmills and weights. The H.I.I.T. (high intensity interval training) bootcamp classes are designed to burn calories, tone muscle and increase metabolism. Each class is 25 minutes of cardio using Woodway treadmills and 25 minutes of strength training on the floor utilizing body weight, dumbbells, medicine balls, resistance bands and TRX.
In Sara, the manager of Inner Fire’s perspective, what sets Inner Fire apart from other bootcamps is the caliber of their instructors, and their attention to the individual. The instructors are there to guide and push you to be your best, but they also recognize that everyone walks in with different fitness levels. They will help you modify and adjust movements as needed.
YOGA & PILATES
Yoga brings the body and mind together and is built on three main elements – exercise, breathing, and meditation. Mat Pilates is a series of low impact exercises focusing on building a connection between the mind and body by strengthening small stabilizing muscle groups, increasing flexibility, improving posture and bringing awareness to the entire body. This mat based class may also incorporate various props to further enhance specific movements.
EVERY BODY YOGA
A mat and chair based movement class that focuses on gentle yoga movements, breath, and meditation with an added focus on cultivating an authentic relationship with the body you are in. Acceptance, self-care, and compassion are the root of this practice, which makes it ideal for beginners, those with limited mobility, and bodies of all shapes, sizes and ages. Participants can expect to comfortably move their bodies, stretch, breathe deeply, relax, feel better, and rediscover how their bodies can be their greatest asset no matter what it looks or feels like.
Despite the diverse roster of classes offered, there are a few common threads– the detailed, professional instruction, the welcoming (and beautiful) environment, and the fun nature of the workouts.
