I love working out Thanksgiving morning. It’s actually one of my favorite parts of the holiday. When I was little my Mom, Grandma, and an aunt or two would bundle up and go for a long, early morning walk on Thanksgiving Day. As I grew older, my cousin and I would go for runs. Now, if I’m not doing the Turkey Trot I love to catch a (preferably) hot yoga class where I can get my mind right, settled in gratitude, and my body right, aka ready for lounging, wine, and eating for the rest of the day. Luckily, while studios typically put their regular scheduling on hold for the holiday, many studios offer special holiday classes. I’ve rounded up some of the best Cincy has to offer this Turkey day.
The Yoga Bar is offering two Thanksgiving Day classes. Both are at 10 AM, one at each of their locations in Newport and OTR. It’s labeled, special holiday class dedicated to the intention of the day. Based on this label, participants will get both a physical and spiritual experience. Expect practices outside of physical movement to include things like gratitude practice, meditation, and intention setting.
Simply Power has Yoga Thanksgiving Flow at it’s Beechmont location at 9:30. Be ready for vinyasas and chaturangas (similar to a pushup for yoga newbies). You’ll sweat.
Our friends at Modo have three offerings this Turkey Day—7AM Hot Flow, 8:30 Modo and 10 AM Modo Flow with Music. The Modo class is a more set sequence with more static poses. The Hot Flow class involves more movement (vinyasas or poses fluidly strung together). The Modo Flow with Music is a combo of both with music.
If you’re not feeling yoga this year you can catch a 75 minute Bootcamp led by Trena Perrine at the LB in Rookwood, one of 3 options for spinning class at CycleBar Hyde Park including a special 7:30 performance ride (longer and harder) led by Jordin Cooper, or a FREE 9AM boot camp class at Benefit Studio in Columbia Tusculum.
Finally, if you want to be outside, but don’t love running the Turkey Trot check out 50 West’s second annual Thanksgiving Day bike ride. Meet there to depart at 10 AM for a 30-mile ride, or a shorter family-friendly ride. If only my husband hadn’t recently broken my bike loading it into our car.
If you miss a workout Thursday and feel like moving on Black Friday, most studios return back to their normal schedules. Two special classes to know about are It’s Working Out’s 10k meter rowing class—the goal is to row 10k meters in an hour class, and JackRabbit’s free yoga class from 9:30-10:30—which can roll you right into shopping their Black Friday sales.
