Sleep. It’s important. Like really important for both our mental and physical health. Lately I’ve been skimping on the zzs because, well, life has been crazy. Between late nights working, 6AM workouts, and late night Instagram scrolling (we all do it) my pillow has been missing me, and body has been feeling it.




I did a little research on sleep to figure out how to remedy my issue. As adults we need 7-9 hours of sleep. Side note, infants need 14-17 hours of sleep. What a life. Anyway, every person varies and I think I probably lean toward needing 8-9 hours. Lately I’ve probably been getting 6-7 at best which has got to change. Below are a list of tips I found to help with better sleep.


1. Stick to a sleep schedule,even on weekends.

I’m horrible at this. Ryan and I usually stay up at least 2 hours later on Friday and Saturday and tend to sleep in. I also ALWAYS hit snooze which is apparenlty really bad for you (says my husband and every article I read today on sleep). 


2. Practice a relaxing bedtime ritual.


YES. I sleep my best when I have a cup of tea, practice gratitude journaling, and do some light reading before bed. Going to reinstate that ritual this week.


3. Exercise daily.

Check! I do think AM workouts help me sleep so much better. Sometimes evening workouts give me too much energy. Does that ever happen to you?


4. Evaluate your bedroom to ensure ideal temperature, sound and light.

I sleep with a fan blowing directly on me. I love, love, love the white noise and feeling cold when I sleep.


5. Sleep on a comfortable mattress and pillows.

Our mattress is amazing. It was a big purchase, but totally worth it. However, we do need new pillows. Any recommendations?


6. Beware of hidden sleep stealers, like alcohol and caffeine.

I’m so guilty of habitually grabbing an afternoon coffee. Molly and I do a ton of work at coffee shops so it’s easy to do. I’ve been trying to switch that afternoon brew to tea which is better for me for a lot of reasons–including better sleep.


7. Turn off electronics before bed.



Honestly, for me, I just need to get in bed earlier and put down my darn phone. I’m setting a challenge this week to get 8 hours every night. To do this, I’m going to get off all technology by 9, practice a bedtime routine, and set a good old fashioned bedtime. Want to do it with me? What sleep tips do you have?
